Picking back up on side control bottom defense…
In this scenario, your opponent has you flattened out with a crossface, but you were able to frame against their head and hip with your forearms to keep them down lower on your torso instead of allowing them to get chest-to-chest.
Although they’re not in a great position to attack you yet, if your opponent really clamps down here, it can be very hard to move.
This is where we look at one of the ways you can apply the principle of “reverse pinning” or pinning from bottom (essentially, using the limitations of your opponent’s own pinning position as a kind of pin against them) in order to force them to give you space… Once again allowing you to create a structurally strong “pyramid” and ultimately escape.
For much, much more on how to get beyond learning more “moves” and instead understand the first principles of escaping from the bottom of side control, headlocks, head & arm, and north/south, be sure to check out my in depth course here.
