How to Save Energy When Recovering Guard

In this video from Bernardo Faria’s channel, I demonstrate two ways to use the “master posture” (neutral spinal alignment) in Jiu-Jitsu to make your guard recovery and retention more efficient –– and effective.

This is where the concept of “energy leakage” or mechanical inefficiency, comes into play.

In Jiu-Jitsu, our goal is always to minimize the amount of physical energy we use and instead let the structure and angle of our body do the “heavy lifting” by optimizing our use of the kinetic chain.

No amount of techniques / moves you learn will compensate for mechanical inefficiencies, which begin with your posture in relation to your opponent.

The great news is that not only will these two individual illustrations help you out dramatically in these respective situations (one being mounted and the other defending an under the legs pass), they can also help you to shift your context and begin looking for other areas where this principle can help you become more efficient as well.
